Letter From the Chairman July, 2009 Dear Friends of NCCS: As most of you are aware, I lost my son, Michael James Sexton, to neuroblastoma, a form of pediatric cancer. During the past twelve years, I have talked, met and cried with hundreds of families whose children have neuroblastoma. I regret that many of these families have lost their children to this battle. We started this organization in memory of Michael in hopes of making a difference. During the last twelve years we have provided hundreds of families with resource handbooks, quarterly newsletters and internet exchange, empowering families with information, the latest on treatments, available resources, etc. However, we have had an uphill fight to achieve pediatric research. Pediatric cancer research today remains a shockingly low priority of the major funders of cancer research! Pediatric cancer receives a small fraction of research dollars compared to others. Why? Well-known celebrities affected by certain diseases have stepped forward to make a big difference! However, no major celebrity has come forward from the 500 to 1,000 U.S. families with children diagnosed with neuroblastoma during 2005 (10,800 U.S. children will be diagnosed with pediatric cancer in 2006). Until now! We have put together a Wall of Fame of our little celebrities...our children, who are proudly displayed on this website! Please help us by sponsoring one of our children! Thank you for your considerations in building our Wall of Fame and making a difference! Warm Regards, Jim Sexton |
